Presenters at The LED Show in Las Vegas |
 |
Dr. Kevin W. Houser
PhD, PE, LC, LEED
AP
Associate Professor of
Architectural Engineering
Penn State University |
Topic: White Light: The
Psychophysics of Trichromatic Mixing
This talk will begin with an
historical overview of trichromacy, then will present results
from new research that builds upon these historical foundations.
The potential and rationale for a trichromatic approach to
white-light generation will be explained from the perspective of
vision science and psychophysical research. Two common ways of
generating white light from LEDs are: 1) convert short
wavelength optical radiation with a down-conversion phosphor to
create a broad emitting SPD; 2) combine multiple narrow-emitting
LEDs using additive color mixing.
Bio: Dr. Houser is an
Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering at the
Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining Penn State in
2008 he was a founding faculty member of the architectural
engineering program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He
has been the Manager of Lighting Education for Philips Lighting
Company and has also worked for Public Works and Government
Services Canada, Elliptipar Corporation in Connecticut, and
Edwards and Zuck in New York City. Dr. Houser is the owner of
Loucetios LLC, a lighting consulting firm based in State
College, PA.

Kevin Willmorth
President
Lumenique, LLC
|
Topic: The Pain and
Pleasures of the Transformation to SSL
In many ways, LEDs and SSL
technology will grow to be just one more tool in the kit for
illumination designers. However, there is more to this emerging
source than the objective delivery of cost effective light.
Getting to the real potential inside this emerging technology
requires investment in imagination, thinking beyond the light
bulb, and development of new products that put this new
technology to work in new ways. Just as the linear fluorescent
lamp changed the landscape of commercial illumination -
leveraging the unique properties of SSL sources is essential in
putting this new technology to work. This presentation will
explore current and future transformations to come; and how the
pain of adoption will be offset by the pleasure of exciting new
horizons.
Bio: Kevin has been involved
with lighting for 30 years. His experience includes lighting
design consulting for a wide range of projects from residential
to large scale commercial and hospitality, product design,
marketing, business strategy, and editorial writing. His past
positions include positions as sole proprietor, VP of Design and
Marketing for Kim, Winona, and Visa Lighting, and VP of Design –
Lighting for Atlandia Design, an interiors group responsible for
the creation of the Golden Nugget and Mirage Hotel/Casinos in
Las Vegas. He currently owns Lumenique, LLC, offering design and
strategic consulting to manufacturers, application design and
technology evaluation for building owners, and SSL editorial for
all Construction business media publications including
Architectural SSL, Architectural Products, and Illuminate. In
addition to his consulting services, Lumenique is developing of
a unique line of LED products that combine high design with high
technology in sculptured forms for task and accent illumination
in residential, hospitality, and commercial settings. Kevin is
passionate about lighting, and has been a strong advocate of
energy conservation and sustainable design approaches throughout
his career.
